When God's Purposes are Painful

God is at work when we cannot see what He is doing.

Message Summary

Genesis 29-30 is filled with deception, rejection, barrenness, jealousy, competition, and human scheming. Yet none of it stops God's purposes. While Jacob's family is consumed with immediate pain and conflict, God is quietly building Israel and advancing the promised
seed through Judah toward Jesus Christ. God's presence does not mean the absence of pain, but our pain is never outside His sovereign purpose.

The Truth We See and Need
God faithfully advances His purposes through the painful circumstances of our lives.

Consider This Week

  1. Where am I struggling because I cannot see what God is doing?
    God does not have to show me what He is doing in order to be doing it. Where do I need to trust His providence in the ordinary details of life?
  2. What pain am I tempted to believe is meaningless?
    Leah could not see the larger purpose God was accomplishing through her suffering. How does Genesis 29 encourage me to trust God with pain I cannot explain?
  3. How am I responding to pain?
    Pain may help explain sinful behavior, but it does not make sinful behavior righteous. Is there envy, anger, manipulation, blame, bitterness, or unbelief that I need to confess?
  4. Where am I looking for my identity and satisfaction?
    Leah repeatedly looked to Jacob's affection to satisfy her deepest ache. What person, circumstance, achievement, or relationship am I asking to give me what only God can provide?
  5. How does the cross give me hope in my pain?
    At Calvary, what looked like defeat was God's predetermined plan of redemption. How does the cross assure me that I can trust God even when I do not understand what He is doing?
