Genesis 32

Message at a Glance

God is faithful when our past sin catches up with us. (vv. 1-8)
God is good when our circumstance3s overwhelm us. (vv. 9-23)
God is enough when our strength fails us. (vv. 22-32)

Message Summary

God sends Jacob home to face Esau, the brother he wronged twenty years earlier. Afraid and overwhelmed, Jacob remembers God's mercy and prays for deliverance. That night God meets him, touches his hip, and gives him the name Israel. Jacob crosses the river still facing Esau, but now he walks with a limp and God's blessing. He is learning to depend on the Lord who has been faithful all along.

The Truth We See and Need
God faithfully brings us through the consequences of sin and the limits of our strength, teaching us to depend upon Him.

Consider This Week

  1. Is there a past sin I need to face honestly? Where am I tempted to excuse it or avoid its consequences? What would confession, repentance, and a faithful next step look like? Read 1 John 1:9.
  2. How has God shown me mercy I did not deserve? Jacob remembered crossing the Jordan with only his staff (v. 10). What specific mercies can I thank God for today?
  3. What is overwhelming me right now? Jacob told God plainly, 'for I fear him' (v. 11). How can I bring my fear to God and hold fast to what He has promised? Read 2 Corinthians 1:8-10.
  4. Where am I trying to control what only God can govern? What plans or abilities have become my source of confidence? How can I work responsibly while resting in God?
  5. What weakness is teaching me to lean on God? How does this story help me to cling to God rather than trust my own strength?

Genesis 31

Message at a Glance

False gods must be protected; the true God protects His people.
False gods cannot see; the true God sees everything.
False gods cannot deliver; the true God faithfully delivers His people.

Message Summary

Genesis 31 contrasts Laban's powerless idols with the living God who faithfully protects, sees, and delivers His people. While Laban searches for his missing gods, Yahweh is preserving Jacob and fulfilling His promises. Like Laban, we can place our trust in things that cannot ultimately satisfy or save us. This passage reminds us that Yahweh alone is worthy of our worship and complete truth.

The Truth We See and Need
Yahweh alone is worthy of our worship and trust.

Consider This Week

  1. What are some of the false gods we are tempted to trust? We may not worship statues, but good things can become idols when we give them the place that belongs to God. What are some ways that money, family, comfort, approval, or even ministry can become more important to us than God?
  2. What does our response to disappointment reveal about our worship? Sometimes our strongest reactions reveal what matters most to us. How can disappointment, criticism, or unexpected change expose what we are trusting for our happiness, security, or identity?
  3. How does knowing that God protects His people change the way we face uncertainties? God's protection does not mean we will never suffer. How does knowing that nothing can prevent god from accomplishing His purposes help us respond to fear, worry, or the desire to control circumstances?
  4. How should knowing that God sees everything change the way we live? God saw Jacob's suffering and faithful labor, even when others did not. How does knowing that God sees our private struggles, unnoticed service, and even our hidden sins both encourage and challenge us?
  5. How can we recognize God's faithfulness when He has not changed our circumstances? Looking back over twenty difficult years, Jacob recognized that God had been with him. How has god used difficult circumstances to grow your faith? How does the cross help us trust Him when we cannot see what He is doing?

]]> When God's Purposes are Painful https://lifewaybaptistchurch.org/blog/2026/09/13/when-god-s-purposes-are-painful Sun, 13 Sep 2026 20:22:19 +0000 https://lifewaybaptistchurch.org/blog/2026/09/13/when-god-s-purposes-are-painful

Genesis 29-30

Message at a Glance

God is at work when we cannot see what He is doing.
God is at work through our pain.
God is at work despite our sinful responses to pain.
The cross is our hope when God's purposes are painful.

Message Summary

Genesis 29-30 is filled with deception, rejection, barrenness, jealousy, competition, and human scheming. Yet none of it stops God's purposes. While Jacob's family is consumed with immediate pain and conflict, God is quietly building Israel and advancing the promised
seed through Judah toward Jesus Christ. God's presence does not mean the absence of pain, but our pain is never outside His sovereign purpose.

The Truth We See and Need
God faithfully advances His purposes through the painful circumstances of our lives.

Consider This Week

  1. Where am I struggling because I cannot see what God is doing?
God does not have to show me what He is doing in order to be doing it. Where do I need to trust His providence in the ordinary details of life?
  2. What pain am I tempted to believe is meaningless?
Leah could not see the larger purpose God was accomplishing through her suffering. How does Genesis 29 encourage me to trust God with pain I cannot explain?
  3. How am I responding to pain?
Pain may help explain sinful behavior, but it does not make sinful behavior righteous. Is there envy, anger, manipulation, blame, bitterness, or unbelief that I need to confess?
  4. Where am I looking for my identity and satisfaction?
Leah repeatedly looked to Jacob's affection to satisfy her deepest ache. What person, circumstance, achievement, or relationship am I asking to give me what only God can provide?
  5. How does the cross give me hope in my pain?
At Calvary, what looked like defeat was God's predetermined plan of redemption. How does the cross assure me that I can trust God even when I do not understand what He is doing?

Hebrews 10:32-39

Message at a Glance

Eternity offers a better possession.
Don't throw away your confidence, endure in faith.
Christ is coming, so put your faith in Him.
Those who trust Christ, keep eternity in view.

Message Summary

Hebrews 10:32-39 is a call to lift our eyes off what is temporary and look toward what is eternal. The writer of Hebrews does not sugar-coat life. Following Christ and trusting the promises of God is often hard. Sometimes this is because we aren’t regularly meditating on the words of Christ. Other times we try to distract ourselves, so we don’t have to consider eternity. Living by faith is closely tied to viewing eternity and those who view eternity learn to grow in their faith.

Key Points:
We need to keep eternity in view because eternity is coming, this life is fleeting, and current circumstances don't tell the whole story.

Consider This Week

  1. In what ways are you tempted to look at this life more than eternity? Why is this a temptation in your life?
  2. Does your life (your relationships, how you spend your energy, your time, or your finances) anchor you to this fleeting life, or do they help you anchor your life to what is eternal?
  3. Consider the trials you are walking through right now in your life. What truth of eternity do your trials often cloud out?
  4. In what way can a healthy view of eternity shape the way you see your current circumstances?
  5. Every believer struggles to keep eternity in view. What are some things that can help you grow in your ability to keep eternity in view on a daily basis?

]]> Bethel, The Grace of God https://lifewaybaptistchurch.org/blog/2026/08/31/bethel-the-grace-of-god Mon, 31 Aug 2026 12:19:39 +0000 https://lifewaybaptistchurch.org/blog/2026/08/31/bethel-the-grace-of-god

Genesis 27-28

Message at a Glance

Grace never minimizes our sin.
Grace is greater than our sin.
Grace is available to us in our sin.
Grace is all about magnifying God.

Message Summary

Genesis 27–28 shows us Jacob honestly—sinful, deceptive, and undeserving. Yet at Bethel, God comes to Jacob with promises he did not earn and grace he could never deserve. God does not excuse Jacob’s sin, but neither is Jacob’s sin greater than God’s grace. The stairway at Bethel ultimately points us to Christ, the One who brings sinful people near to God. Grace humbles the sinner and magnifies the God who saves.

Key Points:
Grace does not ignore our sin. It meets us in our sin, gives us what we could never earn, and turns our
attention from ourselves to the God who saves.

Consider This Week

  1. Where am I tempted to minimize, excuse, or blame others for my sin?
Grace begins with seeing our sin honestly. What do I need to confess rather than defend?
  2. Is there a failure in my past that I have begun to believe is greater than God’s grace? How does Jacob’s story remind me that God’s grace is greater than the sin of those who come to Him?
  3. Am I waiting to “clean myself up” before I come honestly to God?
Jacob met God while living in the consequences of his sin. Where do I need to receive God’s grace?
  4. Am I trying to build my way up to God—or resting in what God has done for me? Babel pictures man reaching upward; Bethel pictures God opening heaven. How does Jesus fulfill that picture for us?
  5. Does my understanding of grace make much of me or much of God?
Take time this week to thank God specifically for grace you did not earn and could never deserve.

]]> When Faithfulness Gets Hard https://lifewaybaptistchurch.org/blog/2026/08/23/when-faithfulness-gets-hard Sun, 23 Aug 2026 10:09:00 +0000 https://lifewaybaptistchurch.org/blog/2026/08/23/when-faithfulness-gets-hard

Genesis 26

Message at a Glance

Genesis 26:1-6 - A famine in the land
Genesis 26:7-11 - Living by fear
Genesis 26:12-22 - From one dirt-filled well to another
Genesis 26:23-33 - A heart of worship

Message Summary

Genesis 26 reminds us that walking by faith does not mean life will be easy. Isaac faced famine, fear, opposition, and the tedious work of digging wells again and again. Yet God remained faithful. Faith refused to let circumstances rewrite what God has revealed, refuses to let fear lead, and keeps doing what is right. We may not understand what God is doing, but a faithful God never wastes the hardships of His children.

Key Points:
  1. Hard circumstances tempt me to question what I know about God.
  2. Hard circumstances tempt me to make decisions based on fear.
  3. Hard circumstances tempt me to grow weary ... when the days are hard and tedious.
  4. Hard circumstances are purposeful not wasteful.

Consider This Week

  1. Where do your present circumstances make it difficult to trust what God has said? What promise or truth about God do you need to believe right now?
  2. What does your fear reveal that you may be struggling to believe about God? How might fear be tempting you toward disobedience?
  3. Where has faithfulness begin to feel tedious or unnoticed? What ordinary work has God placed in front of you that you simply need to keep doing?
  4. Isaac did not have to win every battle because he could trust God's provision. Is there a criticism, wrong impression, or conflict you need to entrust to God rather than trying to control?
  5. Where can you see God's undeserved goodness? As you give thanks for His daily provision, how does it point you to His greatest provision--Jesus Christ and the salvation we could never earn?

Stop by one of the four directories (in the adult Sunday school classes, North Foyer, and Children’s Welcome Desk) and update one physical copy with any new family, address, cell phone changes.

If you want your picture changed or updated, please email a digital copy to info@lifewaybaptistchurch.org or stop by on your way out of church. We will have people available to take your picture.

We will be accepting updates and changes for the month of August. New & updated directories will be available for pick up on September 20.

MOVING HELP

We are excited to welcome back Daniel, Alayna, and Kate Overly!

They will be moving into their new home on Saturday, August 15, and could use some help unloading and unpacking their moving truck.

Because we will not know the exact time assistance will be needed until Saturday morning, we are looking for volunteers who are willing to be on standby. If you are available to help, please email info@lifewaybaptistchurch.org, and we will add you to a contact list and reach out with details on moving day.

Thank you for helping us welcome the Overly family back to Lifeway!

Dear Lifeway Family,

Thank you for the incredible kindness you showed our family as you recognized 25 years of ministry at Lifeway. We are deeply humbled by your generosity and grateful for the many cards, encouraging words, and expressions of love. Your thoughtfulness was a great encouragement to both Melinda and me.

We are also sincerely thankful for the generous gift that will allow our family to take a trip together in the future. We are looking forward to making those memories and will be excited to share about the trip with you.

It is a tremendous privilege to serve as your pastor. Thank you for allowing us to walk alongside you through the joys and challenges of life these past 25 years. We love our church family and thank God for each of you.

With gratitude,

Steve & Melinda Von Bokern

MIDWEEK CONNECTION FELLOWSHIPS

BEGINNING THE WEEK OF AUGUST 19

Our Connection Fellowships will begin the week of August 19! We believe that biblical fellowship is an essential part of Christian growth. God has designed His people to encourage one another, bear one another's burdens, and grow together in Christ. While fellowship happens in many ways, one of the intentional opportunities we provide is through our Connection Fellowships.

We encourage everyone to prayerfully consider making biblical fellowship a regular part of your life at Lifeway. Whether you have attended a fellowship in the past or are interested in joining one for the first time, we invite you to sign up. We look forward to seeing Christ-centered relationships continue to grow!

Sign-up HERE or at the Information Desk.

Right now, our local blood supply is at a critically low level. Hospitals across Indiana rely on volunteer blood donors every single day, and the need has become especially urgent this summer.

Just one blood donation can save up to three lives. Whether it's a trauma patient, a child battling cancer, a premature baby, or someone undergoing surgery, your donation can make all the difference.

Schedule your appointment here or stop by as a walk-in if space allows. Bring a friend, coworker, or family member and help strengthen our community's blood supply.

Informational packets are also available at the Information Desk if you would like to learn more. Every donation matters. Thank you for being a blessing to others!

Students & their families are invited to join us. Register online for each Summer Night event you plan to attend. June 3rd, we’ll be hosting a cookout at McCormick’s Creek State Park. We will meet at Deer Run shelter. Cost for park entrance is $7 per car (IN Residents or $15 for out of state residents). Bring a side dish to share.
